Solar Energy Projects around the World

What is Solar Energy?

Solar energy is energy provided by the sun. This energy is in the form of solar radiation can makes the production of solar electricity. Electricity can be produced from light, PV, and cells. Solar energy produces most electricity during the hot days. One megawatt hour of solar electricity offsets about 0.75 to 1 tonne of CO2. Australia is one of the sunniest countries in the world so it has a huge potential for solar PV  to make a  contribution for electricity generation. That is why so many countries today want to build a innovation solar energy project that develop electricity generation by using natural resources such as sunlight.

Solar Powered Projects around the World

1) Sanyo’s Solar Ark

Solar Ark is an ark-shaped solar photovoltaic power generation facility. It is solar-collecting building that boasts over 5,000 solar panels which kick off over 500,000 kWh of energy per year. Solar Ark is about 315-meter-wide and 37-meter-tall which is located in  Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Also, there are over 5,000 colored LEDs that can light up to create images and messages. Inside the Solar Ark is solar museum and laboratory where Sanyo employees are working for the next solar technology generation. Sanyo’s Solar Ark is one of the largest solar building in the world.

2) China’s Solar Powered Office Complex

China is an heavy user of fossil fuels and climate killer. This country met 70% of its need by exploiting coals. The pollution in China is at a dangerous level where people have to limit their outdoor activities. That is why China wants to make a change in its environment by building a largest solar-powered office building in the world. This building is located Dezhou, China. the 75,000 square meter structure building is used for scientific research, meeting, training facilities, and a hotel. All of these activities will be run on solar power. China is trying to use solar power to develop energy generation and reduce pollution. Also, this project can save 30% more energy than national standard. Chinese want to make their country as green as possible from now.

Sahara Forest Project

Sahara Forest Project is as a solution to provide fresh water, food, and energy in the world’s most arid regions. This project was created by Michael Pawlyn, Seawater Greenhouse designer Charlie Paton, and structural engineer Bill Watts. Norway and Jordan recently signed an agreement to allow Sahara Forest Project to build on a plot of land in Jordan. Also, there will be a group conduct the number of studies in Jordan. The test size will be 200,000 square meter plot in Aqaba which is close to the Red Sea. Sahara Forest Project combines Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and Seawater Greenhouses which can provide a huge amount of energy and sustainable agricultural solutions. Also, Seawater Greenhouses uses solar power to convert salt water into fresh water which can use to grow fresh vegetables. This project is scheduled in 2015 and if it is successful, we will not be worried about the food supplies and water because they can be grew and produced even though in the desert.

Conclusion

I strongly believe that we will be safe in this technological environment because we are trying to make this planet as green as possible. People are trying to reduce pollution by their best. Following three examples about innovated solar energy powered projects, I believe that we can use solar to develop energy generation in every situation. I hope that those projects can do their best in saving energy and reduce pollution around the world. I hope to see Sahara Forest Project be successful in the future. It will be amazing when we can grow food in a hottest desert in the world. Someday, we might be able to live there instead of finding the living space on Mars.

Solar Energy Experiment

Experiment’s goal

While doing this kind of experiment, students support to learn and understand the relationship between light intensity and the voltage output of the solar cell, as well as the relationship between the wavelength of light and the voltage output of the solar cell.

Equipment

  • One solar cell
  • One voltage probe
  • One NXT adaptor
  • NXT with light sensor
  • One light source
  • Labview VI vi
  • Ruler
  • Colored film filters
  • Excel sheet

Set up

  • Plug battery on NXT with light sensor
  • Plug the NXT adaptor to NXT with light sensor through a USB cable (code number 1)
  • Connect voltage probe to a solar cell by cables (red-red) and (black-black)
  • Connect USB cable between computer and NXT with light sensor

20160219_120311

Experimental processes

1) Measure voltage output by light intensity at different distances

  • Open Labview
  • Put Solar on top of flashlight which is zero distance.
  • Use ruler to measure the distance between flashlight and solar cell.

20160219_123921

  • Choose 4 more different distances to measure
  • Press START on the Labview program to record the voltage ouput
  • At the first experiment, we only got 10 numbers of data for each test
  • Open Excel File after each test to calculate the average those ten numbers to get one final result.
  • To calculate average, we tried to get the sum of 10 numbers then divided by ten.

For example : (0.39587 + 0.34455 + 0.33172 + 0.42153 + 0.31889 + 0.33172 + 0.33172 + 0.37021 + 0.38304 + 0.31889)/10 = 0.354814 V

  • Or you can calculate on Excel Spreadsheet using its functions
  • Finally, we come up with with this final result for the first experiment

sci3sci7

After this experiment, my teammate and I learned that when the flashlight and solar cell are far away from each other, the light will be less power and the voltage ouput will decrease. However, it is a little weird at distance 4 cm and 6 cm where the voltage output increase and decrease at distance 8 cm. Over all, we got a nice graph and data.

2) Measure voltage output by light intensity at the same distance with different colored film filters

  • Open the labview program
  • We chose 4 cm as the only distance in this experiment
  • There is 4 colored film filters: orange, light blue, dark blue, and light purple
  • Put each of them in front of the flashlight for each test.
  • Press START to record the data
  • Open Excel Spreadsheet and calculate average of 10 numbers for each color as what we did in the first experiment.
  • Finally, we came up with this result for the second experiment

sci5sci6

In this experiment, we made a mistake at the first test. We though that it would come up 10 numbers each time as what we did in the first experiment. However, the numbers countinued to exceed 10 numbers so my teammate decided to press STOP. It immidiately affected our data. We tried to take the last 10 numbers but I though that we couldn’t get a correct data. Then, we tried to stop at the number 10 for the next test. When we got the average of voltage output for each of colored film filters, I assumed that the voltage ouput would decrease at any ligh colored film filters such as light blue and light purple as what we got.

Conclusion

After doing this kind of experiment, I learned that the voltage output can be afftected by distance and color. When the distance is far away from the light source, the voltage output will also decrease because the light is not powerful and strong at the logh distance. Additionally, even though the light source and solar cell stay at the same direaction for whole experiment, the voltage output still be changed by the different color. When we use dark color, the voltage output will increase and vice versa. It is same situation when we wear black and red in a hot day, we will feel more hot because dark colors can get more temperature and energy than the light one.

Generator Lab

Goal and Material

The goal of this experiment is understanding  the relationship between light intensity and the voltage output of the solar cell.

For the material, we have

  • One solar cell
  • One voltage probe
  • One NXT adaptor
  • NXT with light sensor
  • One light source
  • Labview VI vi
  • Ruler
  • Colored film filters
  • Excel sheet

20160212_125323

Experiment process

  • We connect everything to the robot then we plug the USB cable between the robot and computer.
  • Then, we open the Labview program
  • This experiment is different from the other one because we did not need to type or calculate any thing before we pressed START.
  • While one of my teammate pressed START on the program, the other would hold a button on light source with a colored film filters inside.
  • After that, this teammate would shake it until the data on the program count to 30. While shaking, we had to count the amount of shake.
  • Every time we did it, we had to open then close the excel sheet. We had 5 times for this experiment.
  • For each time, we had to type the amount of shake and calculated the sum of voltage (30 numbers for each time).
  • Also, we had to calculate the voltage in square and we only took the voltage which is square from each time for the final result. For example, we have 30 numbers on the last time. We tried to calculate the square each of them. Finally, we plus all of those square number together to get the sum of (voltage)^2

Untitled

  • Finally, we came up with this table and graph.

sci2sci

  • However, it is not similar to what our professor expect for the final result.

Conclusion

The result seems a little bit weird because there is negative and not as same as what professor expect for the final result. I think that it is because I was stop a few second while doing the shake, then the result is not correct at all. For the next time doing this kind of energy experiment, I think that we have to eat breakfast before coming to class to have full energy.

Tesla Coil

Background

Nikola Telsa was an Serbian American inventor and electrical engineer who used a coil to produce wireless energy in his innovative experiments such as electrical lighting, phosphorescence, or X-ray generation. Inventor Nikola Tesla was born in July of 1856 in in the village of Smiljan, Austrian Empire. He came to the United States in 1884 to work with Thomas Edison for the Continental Edison Company in France, designing and making improvements to electrical equipment. In 1886, Telsa opened his own company with the other two partners, Robert Lane and Benjamin Vail, and named for his company in Telsa’s name,  Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing. In 1891, he invented “Telsa coil” which is an electrical resonant transformer circuit that still be used in radio technology today. He died on January 7, 1943 in New York.

What is a “Telsa Coil”?

“Telsa coil” which is an electrical resonant transformer circuit. It was invented in 1891 which was before the conventional iron-core transformers. Telsa coil is set up with two part: primary coil and secondary coil. Those two coils and capacitors are connected by a gap of air. The spark gaps connect the coils to six pack capacitor and NST protection filter. From the filter, everything will connect to a Neon sign transformer.

tesla-coil-flat-bur

How does it work?

  1. The transformer boosts the voltage
  2. The power source is hooked up to the primary coil. The primary coil’s capacitor will soak up to charge to develop the wireless energy.
  3. The electric current will build up until the energy hit the the tipping point.
  4. A hug voltage current will flow from the gap to the secondary coil.
  5. The energy go back and forth between two point. On the secondary coil, there is a top-load which will shoot out the lightning when all the current is concentrated.

“Fix the World”

Fix the World S.A.R.L is an international business and humanitarian association which was established in 2012. Fix the World has released an energy generator which is inspired by by Tesla’s “Energy Generator” in 1894. They focus on any project dealing with energy access, economic hardship, and basic humanitarian aid. One of their project is Quantum Electric Generator (QEG) which uses the law of Tesla Coil to develop energy to make the light bulbs light. It is one example that people using Tesla Coil to produce energy today. The video below showing hos QED works and it surprising result.

Conclusion

Even though Tesla was called “mad scientist”, we cannot reject that his idea about free energy is interesting and valuable. I hope that we can use this idea to solve the energy problems today. Fix the World is like a pioneer in this field by using a wonderful idea to solve electrical problems. Their effort will be accepted on someday .

Lego Mindstorm Experiment

Goal and Object

The goal of this activity is studying about Newton’s second law of motion. During the activity, we had been exploring the Newton’s second law, the law of conservation of energy, velocity and acceleration, and power.

For the experiment, we had to use  Lego Mindstorm motor to lift weights, a pulley, and the masses.

Experiment process

  • Plug the USB cable into Lego Mindstorm motor and computer
  • Balance the motor and masses through a pulley
  • Then we measure the height from the bottom the the top of pulley. The height is 31.6 cm = 0.316m
  • Set up a table for 2 tests; 5 times for each.
  • Open the program in Window software and begin to add number
  • Press Start to run the motor
  • For the 1st test, we use the same force with different masses. We chose 50 N for the force, one after another, 0.25 kg, 0.23 kg, 0.21 kg, 0.15 kg, 0.1 kg. Next, we calculated the Potential Energy = mgh. Then we come up with this result

m1c1                         m2c2

  • For the 2nd test, we use the different force, 100 N, but in the same masses as the test one from the small to large, 0.1 kg, 0.15 kg, 0.21 kg, 0.23 kg, 0.25 kg. Also, we used the same equation for Potential Energy. After that, we come up with the result like this.

m1c2                              m2c1

Also, this is a picture and video that show how the process works

20160205_123224

Conclusion

Even though we can collect all the data in this experiment, we though that there would be some mistake because the graph is really weird on the second test. Nevertheless, this activity helped us to learn about Newton’s second law and how to use equation to apply in the experiment.

SpaceX

What is SpaceX?

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, as known as SpaceX, is an American aerospace manufacturer and space transport service company in California. SpaceX was found by Elon Musk, an American business magnate, engineer and inventor. His main goals are reducing global warming through sustainable energy production, and reducing human extinction by search for a colony on Mars. That is why SpaceX was built.

Goals

The main goal of SpaceX is inventing a kind of rocket that can bring human into the space and come back with the intact rocket. Also, the “ultimate goal is enabling people to live in another planets.” (SpaceX).

What is the difference between NASA and SpaceX?

NASA: sending rocket into the space then breaking out itself. Only the satellite will stay in the universe after the rocket break out and explode in the space.

SpaceX: the rocket is designed with 2 stages. When it comes into the universe, the 2nd stage will break out and falling while the 1st stage still flying up. After that, the 1st stage will break out and the top of it is the satellite. However, when the 2nd stage is falling, it still have energy and power to launch. After finishing the process, the 2nd stage will returning to a landing zone (R) at the Cape Canaveral Air Force. The company said that exploding the rocket in the space is very expensive so they tried to invent a product that can launch into the space and return back to the Earth.

These two picture is showing how the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket works.

maxresdefault                      Preview SLS

Also, there is a video that show from the beginning to the and of the flight. The SpaceX rocket launched into the universe, then broke out and return to the land zone. The video had been recorded by SpaceX even though the rocket was in the universe. All the members of company were happy for what they achieved.

Conclusion

SpaceX had done a wonderful project that help we having more hope about finding the living in universe. We still believe that there is someplace in the universe where the human can live on it, and SpaceX is doing what we want to do in some day.

Lego Robot Car Experiment

Goal and Object

The main goal in this experiment is measuring the distance and speed of the wheel while a lego car is traveling in a certain amount of time. The object that our team used is an lego car which can connect to computer to calculate its distance and speed through a program.

Screen-Shot-2016-01-04-at-8.11.29-AM

Experiment Process

  • First, we connected the car to computer through two USB cables.
  • Second, we opened the VI to record the wheel rotation, distance, and speed.
  • Next, we used a ruler to measure the radius of wheel.
  • Then, we found the distance by calculating the circumference of the wheel. (d = circumference)
  • After that, we entered the information into the VI and began to record the speed
  • Also, we had to record in two way. One by ruler, and the other is on computer.
  • Third, we let the can run in a certain amount of time and distance that we already set up on the computer.
  • Fourth, we used ruler to measure the distance that the car had passed.
  • Finally, we wrote down the number that we had record by ruler and the one on computer that had been already calculated.
  • Additionally, we had to do the experiment three tests with the different number of time and power. Also, in each tests, we had to do three times so it would be nine times totally

Calculation

  • First, we use the equation of circumference to calculate the distance because distance = circumference (d=2pi*r)
  • Then, we converted from centimeter to meter
  • Finally, after each test, we would calculate the percentage of error between computer and ruler measuring result.

% error = [|dm-dc|/((dm+dc)/2)]*100

Result

sci

Conclusion

Even though the percentage of errors are still big in our opinion, we felt satisfied with what we did and experienced through this experiment.

A “Smarter” Grid

What is Smart Grid?

Smart grid is an electrical grid which is used to develop network communication. It is a combination between Information Technology, Communication Technology, and Electrical Power System. In contrast with the traditional grid, smart grid uses two-way dialogue to develop communication between utilities and consumers. Also, the information can be exchanged to each other. We can say that Smart Grid is as an new upgrade for the original one.

How does it work?

In the past, the traditional grid uses one-way power flow to deliver the energy power from the power plant to household. First, the transmission lines will carry electricity in a long distance from power plant to the distribution line. Then, those line will carry the electricity to households.

However, everything has changed now. We have a “smarter” grid which can make everything works easily.  Using solar pin and wind to create energy power. Then it will deliver in two-way power flow from power plant to home than come back. It can help consumers manage the electricity usage easily and quickly.

smart_grid1

Advantages

High quality: the state can manage how much electricity usage of each household by the information they get in two-way communication.

Consumer satisfy: they don’t worry much about how much they have been charge because they can manage them from now.

Disadvantages

Expensive to rebuild: “cost much more than the $4.5 billion in federal funds” to rebuild the grid

Risk of privacy: hackers can control thousand of meters and demand of power. Also, they can get you information that your house and power station exchange to each other such as what is your address? How much power usage did your house use?

Conclusion

It is a great idea to improve and develop. Also, we need to work more to figure out what we can do to protect customers’ privacy. I hope that we will have more project like this to keep our planet greener.

Pugedon Smart Recycling Box

Background

Pugedo Smart Recycling Box is a wonderful vending machine which take the bottles and give food for the stray dogs. In Istanbul, a city of Turkey, there are over 150,000 stray dogs on the streets. They do not have food to eat and place to live. That is why Pugedo, a company that created a great vending machine for stray dogs and cats. It is a brilliant idea when we do not need to spend money for stay animals. We can use whatever we have to create something for the them.

1408633387633_wps_18_Mandatory_Credit_Photo_by            1408633418416_wps_22_Mandatory_Credit_Photo_by

How does it work?

There are two trays in the machine where stray dogs and cats can come to eat. One of them is for the food, and another is for drink. Also, there are two holes for the people to put their bottles or pour water in. Whenever you put a bottle into this machine, the food and water will fall into the trays. Then the strays can come and it. Here is an video that show how this vending machine works.

Goal

The goal of this project is taking money from bottle recycling to giving food for the strays. It can help those strays to have a better life and reduce their hardship on the streets. Engin Girgin, an inventor of the machine, emphasized that, “My primary goal was to make people see that they don’t have to spend any money to help stray dogs. And I also wanted to show that people can do good deeds with things they would normally throw away.” (Finnis, DailyMail). We can help many of them from those thing that we used to throw away every day.

Pugedon-Online-Katalog-Nightly-2014-08-25-23.04.45

Conclusion

I hope that we can use our power to protect those animal. I believe that the success of this project can change the whole world economy. If this vending machine works successfully in Turkey, I hope that the US can imports or invent a similar machines that can help the strays get away from the hunger. I want to thanks Pugedon for creating a wonderful system that can take care all the dogs living on the streets easily.
