Painting to Exhibit
Human Factors and Universal Design | Second Year
This course was unlike an other I have taken. It’s main focus is making sure to always design for everyone, as equals, while keeping the idea interesting. This project in particular challenged us to make a 10’x10’ museum exhibit based on a Jose Heerkens painting. At the same time we had to keep in mind that everyone coming to museums have different needs and abilities. This made us think about how they would not only experience the painting that comes to life, but also how they would comfortably be able to enter and move throughout the exhibit. I decided to incorporate the painting on the floor using different textiles. For lighting, I used the strips of yellow and blue within the painting, as my lighting strips. I then pulled apart the lengths and colors of the strips to make into shelving and seating. Lastly, I added a video of Jose creating her painting for visitors to watch and understand what they were experiencing.
