Change can be scary. The only constant is change yet we often resist it; but remember, if something doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you. Are you standing still? Are you in the same place (physically, emotionally, professionally, etc.) as you were a year ago? Or are you moving forward?

A journey can sometimes be monotonous, boring, and repetitive. So try to change it up, even if it is in small ways. Starting with small changes can help you deal with big changes. What are some changes you can make today?

For example, when training for my marathon, I would add a new song to my playlist each day. I would change my running route, even if it meant getting in my car to find a different trail or route. Occasionally I ran with someone to break up the loneliness of a long run. I sometimes signed up for a road race to break up the solitude of training alone. I also changed my sneakers each day, swapping them out. This helped prevent injury as the foam in your sneakers may take 24 hours to rise back up after running on it. I changed my clothes–I bought a bright color or some new shorts or something that made me excited to run or exercise. I sometimes changed the side of the road I ran on (if there were sidewalks on both sides–safety first).

Change up the classes you take in law school to have different experiences with different professors. Take a transactional drafting class in addition to those that focus on litigation. Take a class in the evening if you usually take them during the day. Take advantage of experiential courses, like clinics and internships.

Try to view change in a positive way instead of something you associate with fear or negative thoughts. Change can be good, even if it is hard. When was the last time you changed something?
