NESAD Instructor/Alum Provides Interior Design Services to Girls Inc. of Lynn

Kathi Vander Laan, adjunct interior design faculty and NESADSU alumna, donated her time and expertise to Girls Incorporated of Lynn, helping them with the interior design and selection of finishes and furnishings for their new facility.

Kathi’s press release and photos of the project follow:

While serving her final term on the Board of Directors of Girls Incorporated of Lynn, Kathi Vander Laan, Interior Designer, VL Designs, decided the best way to give back to the organization was to provide “pro-bono” interior design services for the new $11 million building project.  The new 28,000 square foot building is more than double the size of the existing facility.  The two-phase project included renovation of the long-abandoned former Shoe School, a building on the state and national historic registers, and new construction.  Everything but the foundation and frame of the old building were replaced.  The new facility contains four floors of program space for girls, administrative offices and a gymnasium.

Kathi donated hundreds of hours issuing interior design drawings, specifying the interior finishes for the flooring, walls and cabinetry and selecting the furniture.  The building exterior paint colors were also her decision.  The building was unveiled during the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Monday, June 22, 2009.  A quote from the Lynn Daily Item dated June 23, 2009, “The building is fantastic.  It has everything to meet the needs of the girls, the staff and the community.”

Girls Incorporated of Lynn has been serving girls in the community since 1942.  The mission of the organization is to respond to the needs of the high-risk, low income girls ranging in age from elementary school through high school and their families through programs, workshops and providing essential family resources.  The organization is dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.
