Analysis

The importance of culture and diversity in the workplace!

Our team has selected segments of our own separate cultural analyses which present areas in which there is a lack of understanding that can lead to confusion, prejudice, and ignorance. While not all documents and snippets provide in-depth personal experiences, there is an array of information which express varying ways to approach real or perceived differences.

We chose to focus on the themes of workplace, culture, and identity.

Molly:

“This bill was prompted by a lack of awareness on both the likelihood and risks of multiple births from a single pregnancy, as well as the growing state of the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Club. While the intended audience is the citizens of the United States, this document is clearly primarily geared towards mothers, especially mothers of twins, triplets, and so on.”

Abi:
“The piece omits any stigma or controversy around Laurie Cabot being a Witch, which most
likely on purpose to keep the piece as neutral as possible. It would be nice to locate a
transcription of the speech Laurie Cabot made at Suffolk on October 29th, 1979. This document
sheds some insight to how Wicca and Paganism has been received at least on college campuses.”

This is an article from Suffolk University News from the Moakley Archive in which a woman spoke to the Suffolk student body about Paganism and her experiences as a Pagan. Both the lack of understanding around Paganism as well as the prejudices that stem from those with different beliefs, have shaped how Cabot navigates through life.

Tess:

“Suffolk’s tuition in 1980 would be equivalent to $8,000, which is still less than half of what it is today. Still, this article depicts the beginnings of great tuition increases rather than a comparison to tuition in the 60’s versus today.”

Kara:
“This particular document was prompted to be written as a result of the political concern that the
many schools encouraging equal opportunities could be further helping athletics administrators
under Title IX through education. GAO was asked to review how public high schools encourage
equal athletic opportunities, as prior research found that sports participation yields many benefits
for youth, and that girls’ participation in sports has increased dramatically since the passage of
Title IX in 1972, but is still lower than for boys.”

This article, titled, High School Sports: Many Schools Encouraged Equal
Opportunities, but Education Could Further Help Athletics Administrators Under Title
IX, touched upon how certain school systems tackled equal sports opportunities for both men and women. Due to perceived disparities on the athletic ability of women compared to that of men, articles like this are necessary to begin to change the status quo and decrease the lack of understanding.

Brianna:

“Unlawful, removable aliens, were some repeated terms. This document’s key message indicates that naturalization laws were not specified or clear, resulting in unlawful actions of detaining immigrants.”
