Carina’s Views on Mental Health
Mental Health is something that appears in many of our identities, and while it can often be something that has a negative reputation, it allows a lot of room for a growth in maturity and personal growth. Carina lost her mother at a young age. She had written these song lyrics when she was young.
When she began middle school, she saw all of her friends becoming close to their mothers. She started to drift away from her father because she was uncomfortable talking to him about the different ways she was growing up.
She would turn to writing lyrics and poems to express her feelings and cope with the loss. Ultimately it helped her to provide myself with the comfort that she wish she had gotten from her mother.
The DSM-5
The DSM-5 was written by the American Psychiatric Association and was published on May 18th, 2013. It was created so mental health professionals in the US would have a common guide and structure to use when diagnosing patients. The contents of the DSM-5 are the different types of mental disorders, the diagnosing factors and symptoms, the possible causes, and the development and growth of the disorders.
Though this information is not explicitly stated, the creation of this document was prompted by the need for an all-encompassing text about the mental disorders of our time. It helps define a substance use disorder and provide examples of substances and how to record the disorders. This can include anything from alcohol or drugs, as well as caffeine, which is often not considered an addictive substance by the general public. Gambling addiction is also included in this document.
Eight individuals in this video speak briefly about the loss of a parent. The video later goes into more detail on each of their personal stories and struggles with bereavement at a young age.
The individuals begin to discuss the ages that their parent died at, and how old they were. They also discuss the cause of death and speak about their own person emotions surrounding the loss. Each individual discusses how losing a parent is something that should be discussed more often. They reflect back on their previous experiences and their relationships with grief and speak about how it has affected their lives. The individuals share how lucky they were to have the time that they did with their parent, or how dealing with the loss gets easier over time.
