How to Grow Perilla

Perilla is a common edible vegetable and herbal medicine. They have high economic value and nutritional value.

Currently, they are widely grown in some countries in East Asia and North America. They are popular in some countries such as Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam, etc.

The stems of this plant are 0.3 to 2 meters high and are green or purple. Stems are four-sided and covered with short hairs. Their leaves are ovate, opposite, green to purple with toothed. They are glossy and downy-haired. They have a distinctive musky, mint-like odor.

Perilla planting time

Perilla is an annual plant. Generally, people plant them around March each year. The temperature and humidity in this season are more suitable for the growth of perilla.

At this time, the rain is relatively sufficient, and the seedling rate of perilla seeds is also high when sown during this period.

Growing Perilla

Generally, perilla is sown by the furrow sowing method. People dug a small trench on the surface of the soil, put perilla seeds every 10cm, and then covered the seeds with a thin layer of soil and sprayed them with water.

If the local climate is dry, people can cover them with a film after sowing. This method prevents the evaporation of water in the soil and maintains soil moisture.

Fertilize Perilla

Top dressing can promote plant growth. Proper water and fertilizer management should be carried out on the perilla during their growing period.

Before sowing perilla, people need to add an appropriate amount of organic fertilizer to the soil. This can maintain the early growth of perilla. When the perilla enters the reproductive growth stage, people need to add nitrogen fertilizer. This can avoid the decline in the yield of perilla due to nutritional deficiencies.

During the growth of perilla, people should pay attention to the water requirements of perilla. After sowing, one should give the perilla sufficient water once, and then again when the plant is colonized.

During this period, people need to water the perilla again appropriately according to the dry and wet conditions and precipitation of the fields.

Finally, people should pay attention to the drainage of the fields.
