  1. MingYu, this paper is very well written! The paper itself is very organized, clearly written and easy to follow. It is a very good thing that Carmen ignores the social prejudices that come with being a lesbian in today’s culture, however it’s too bad that she is unable to discuss this with her parents. I also never realized how unaccepted the idea of being a lesbian is in China.

It is interesting how you compare Carmen to Mr. Garrison from South Park. I also thing Carol from Friends was the perfect character to identify herself with since they both had dated a man in the past. I like the comparison that you made between Carmen being isolated from society for being a lesbian and Muslim woman being isolated from mainstream society for wearing their veil.

I’m not sure I agree with your argument that Carmen is “restructuring” the image of the lesbian. You mention that “lesbians don’t need to be masculine” however I don’t believe that is common characterizing associated with being a lesbian.

I’m not sure if it was just my computer but in regards to formatting it looks like there are two different fonts used in the second paragraph. I would also just be aware of some grammatical errors.

Very nice job – well done!

  2. MingYu, this analysis paper is very well organized and written. The ideas presented in a paper are consice and clear to understand. The introduction part helps me to understand the gay and lesbian statistics in China. The part about interviews reveals interesting facts about Carmen and how she negotiates her lesbian identity. From this part I learned how Carmen became a lesbian and how she negotiates her lesbian identity in China and in the United States.

I liked how you tied the ideas from “Mr. Garrison” article with Carmen. Especially I liked how you connect the idea how sexual prientation goes through a conversion. I found that the comparison of Carmen and Mr. Garrison is clear and easy to understand.
However, for your second article you chose the article about muslim women. You mentioned that Carmen tries to reconstruct the image of a lesbian person since she does not look like a stereotypical lesbian. This idea lacks of further explanation. If Carmen looks feminine how do people learn about her sexual orientation? Does she say about her sexual orientation whe she meets with new people? I feel that you could explain it more deeply.
Overall, it is a well written paper. The analysis part is very concrete and the ideas presented there helped me to understand the articles better.
    Good job, MingYu.

  3. Hi Mingyu,
Your paper is well written and shows an understanding of what you have studied from class. The paper is well organized and in a good format which make it easy to read.
I like the person you choose to conduct your interview. She perfectly fits the topic of “difference”. In the first part, you introduced Carmen in a very clear and detail way, which make the audience to know about Carmen so much.

In the next part, you analyze Carmen with the connection of other materials. You did a good job in relating them. I think the character you choose in the drama “Friends” is very appropriate. Both Carmen and Carol are lesbian and both of them had boyfriends before.

Also, I love the comparison you made between Carmen and the article “Veiled Muslim woman”. Although they are totally different, these two groups of people share some common characteristic such as the minority in the main society. I agree with the idea you mentioned that the image of lesbian has been reconstructed today. Lesbians were considered masculine in the past while today they are not.

Finally, Chiang’s article is a good complementary of the above two articles because “the first and second articles I chose only focus on US society and does not talk about non-US society”

    Overall, the paper is good!

  4. Hello Mingyu~

I would like to say that it is a great analysis paper.

First of all, this well organized paper provides the imformation of the person you interviewed, Carmen, she is a lesbian so she is an good reprensetative of the topic “difference” in our class. Then you provide some detailed background information, which included number and percentage of LGBQT people in China, these information lead me to a clear understanding of how these people identify themselves in China.

The interview part provides more information of the interviewee. Seprating the information you got from the interview into different parts—family, school, her indetification, her life now, drama character is really a good way to organize those information.

For the analyze part, first I don’t quite understand/agree that you relate Carmen to Mr. Garrison in South Park. After reading the two main points you provided—“her sexual orientation went through a conversion as well” and they both “can be seen as a radically responsive attempt to destabilize both existing masculine- feminine binaries and the routes through which others have sought a similar destabilization” and your clear analysis, I started to agree with you.

The second article you used the point ”isolating from the mainstream society” is also a good choice. These two group—lesbian and the Muslim maybe seen as totally different groups, and you amazingly connected them.

The third article completed the two articles above. You focused on the “different people in China”, meanwhile gave some opinions related. I think if you could, you can give some more deeper discussion on this area. Overall, it is a great paper.

  5. MingYu i think your paper is really outstanding and well written. From this paper, it shows you have a good understanding of the in class reading, you presented the connection between in class readings and Carmen very clearly. I think your friend Carmen is very brave that as a lesbian she doesn’t care about what other people see her included her parents. I think compare Mr. Garrison to Carmen is a clever choice. Mr. Garrison doesn’t really know his sexuality is and nor Carmen few years back. And I also think Carol from Friends is also the great character to compare with Carmen, because they both are lesbian, and have been in the relationship with male before. I also like you pick veiled muslim woman as your in class reading. Although, veiled muslim are not treated fairly by the western society, although the concept for both are different . But by your demonstration. I like the connection between Carmen and veiled Muslim, since lesbian and veiled muslim are look differently by the mainstream society. You focus on the different people in China for the peer reviewed article, I think it’s a great choice, just might be better if there are more analysis part for the last paragraph, then it would be perfect.
Overall, I really like you tied all the sources and articles with Carmen, good work MingYu!

  6. This was a clearly organized and well-written paper! I like that you interviewed someone you have known for a long time. I thought that the percentages of gay people in China versus gay people in America was a salient piece of information. You summarized the two interviews in a pleasant, easy to read style. I found it interesting that you chose the article with Mr. Garrison and I liked how you related his constantly changing identity with Carmen’s identity metamorphosis. I agree that both Garrison and Carmen’s identity has a destabilizing effect on traditional stereotypes. Therefore the “Muslim Women and the Veil” article fits very well into your analysis, and the parallels you drew (negative image, isolation from mainstream) are great. I am perhaps a little less convinced by the third article but you do make several relevant analogies. I believe choosing an article that adds a Chinese, non-U.S. perspective was an excellent idea. One subejct I disagree with is that, in my opinion, people no longer think that gay men are feminine and lesbians are masculine, but that can depend on the country, or the population. Overall I believe that you wrote an really good paper. It was easy to read and clearly argued. Great job, MingYu!
