Boston comics artist Karl Stevens visited Wyatt Bonikowski’s SF H182 “Heroes, Antiheroes, and Outsiders” class on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, to speak about his work and to demonstrate his process of making comics. He spoke about his beginnings as an independent comics artist: self-publishing his first book, landing a weekly strip in the Boston Phoenix, and publishing book-length collections of these strips with independent comics publishers. He then spoke about his big breaks: being commissioned by the Village Voice to create a new comic strip, which grew into his most recent book, Penny; and getting noticed by The New Yorker cartoons editor, where he has since published a number of his cartoons. One of these cartoons caught the eye of actor Jamie Lee Curtis, who asked him to draw the graphic novel based on her upcoming directorial debut, the horror film Mother Nature. Karl demonstrated his watercolor wash technique with one of the final pages of Mother Nature, showing them how he applies the color over the penciled and inked drawing.
