Chancellor J. Keith Motley announced today that the University of Massachusetts Boston, in partnership with the Organization Maya K’iche, will host an address by the Indian-rights activist, 1992 Nobel Prize laureate, and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Rigoberta Menchú Tum on April 6. Organization Maya K’iche represents thousands of members of the Maya K’iche ethnic group now residing in New Bedford that fled Guatemala in the 1980s and 1990s due to the imminent dangers of civil war and genocide.
Dr. Rigoberta Menchú Tum – who is also a world-renowned author, presidential candidate in 2007 for the Encounter for Guatemala party, and the head of her own international foundation – will address students, faculty, and staff at UMass Boston from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Ball Room, located in the third floor of the Campus Center. She will speak on recent events in the areas of indigenous rights, ethno-cultural reconciliation and citizen participation in environmental issues in the Americas.
Dr. Menchú is known worldwide for encouraging collaboration among local, national, and international human rights organizations in order to denounce human rights violations committed against Native American populations. During her presentation, she will also discuss the treatment of hundreds of members of the Maya K’iche community (to which she belongs in Guatemala) after being detained during an immigration raid executed by U.S. government-enforcement agencies on the Michael Bianco factory in New Bedford in March 2007.

16) More Flamenco
Mavi Dance presents “Flamenco Blood on Tour” (Sangre Flamenca en Gira) Boston in the middle of winter may be one of the coldest times of the year, but come January 2009, experience the fiery passion and heat of Flamenco as the show Sangre Flamenca En Gira (“Flamenco Blood On Tour” in spanish) comes to town presented by Clara Ramona and Co…with guest artists Isaac and Nino de Los Reyes. This is no ordinary flamenco show but a significant one, as the title indicates, as this phenomenal mother and sons’ team shares their lifelong family heritage in dance.
DATES: LOCATION:
Tickets: $40, $30 students/seniors (call 617.358.2500) Parking: http://www.bu.edu/fitrec/membership/services/parking.html
Event info: http://www.bu.edu/fitrec/programs/dance/events.shtml
More artist info: http://www.clararamona.com |
The show promises not only to entertain but to celebrate both a homecoming and a reunion. This will be first time Clara Ramona and her sons will share the stage together again in the United States since 1996, nearly 12 years ago. Since then, they have traveled and performed around the globe, individually acquiring international recognition. But now that journey has been brought full circle to bring them back to their roots again. A fact probably not well known in Spain’s flamenco scene is that Isaac and Nino are native Bostonians, both born and raised in our own backyard. And their mother, Clara Ramona, herself took her “first steps” in flamenco back at the Boston Conservatory. So the city of Boston can take much pride in such homegrown talents that have gone on to earn global acclaim. Sangre Flamenca En Gira will showcase an array of authentic and traditional Spanish dances and Flamenco, with a brilliant cast of gifted and multi-talented musicians and Clara Ramona’s dancers. |
