Collecting evidence of student learning

Whether instructors are delivering instruction in a traditional classroom (F2F) or online, assessment instruments are designed to provide students with immediate feedback to help them understand and apply what they have learned. Students benefit from seeing the “fit” of the material with a real-world application.

Formative assessments, while helping instructors identify what students are learning or what misconceptions they might have, also help students assess their own learning and may lead them to reconsider their strategies if and when they are not successful.

Summative assessments may also be used to further student learning through projects that encourage students to apply what they have learned to an authentic experience.

Assess and readjust

Collect feedback from students, conduct a personal reflection, and engage colleagues in a discussion about learning experiences. This information can help you readjust plans for the future.
