Inclusive Mentorship: Enhancing Engagement Across Generational and Cultural Lines

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Do you want to be a mentor or a mentee, but feel nervous about networking or navigating cultural differences? This workshop is designed for HR professionals, university faculty and staff, industry professionals, and individuals seeking to engage in meaningful mentorship, particularly in environments without established mentorship programs. If you’re part of an established program, we welcome your participation as well. You will have the opportunity to hear from two higher education professionals who identify as members of the BIPOC community on how to build impactful mentoring relationships and become a champion for diversity and equity in the professional realm. Join us as we explore the transformative potential of mentorship in nurturing talent, fostering inclusivity, and advancing career progression.

Key topics include:

  • Transitioning beyond traditional mentorship models: Participants will learn how to adapt mentorship approaches to suit the demands of remote work environments, ensuring meaningful engagement and support.
  • Mastering effective mentoring conversations: Through interactive exercises and discussions, attendees will discover techniques for facilitating open, constructive dialogues that foster growth and learning.
  • Embracing diversity in mentorship: The workshop will provide tools and frameworks for navigating power dynamics and cultural differences, promoting inclusive and empowering mentorship relationships.
  • Bridging generational and cultural gaps: Participants will gain understanding and appreciation for mentoring across diverse cultural and generational backgrounds, fostering mutual respect and collaboration.

ABOUT MORGAN:

Morgan Brittney Austin, MBA applies her industry knowledge in the world of media and communications to her role as a Senior Assistant Director of the Journalism, Media & Communication Career Community at the Suffolk University Center for Career Equity, Development & Success. Before joining Suffolk, Morgan worked at various marketing agencies, brands, and startups, fostering her skills in copywriting and relationship-building with clients and colleagues, alike. She uses these skills to support her students’ career development in areas such as broadcast journalism, film production, global communications, and much more.

Morgan believes that through mentorship, individuals can unlock their potential through developing their skills, engaging in networking opportunities, building their confidence, and most importantly, fostering their personal growth journey.

ABOUT JULIE:

Julie Nguyen, EdD, has over 15 years of experience in higher education, encompassing admissions, academic advising, experiential learning, and career services. Currently, Julie serves as the Director of Student Career Development at Boston University Metropolitan College, where she is committed to supporting every student’s unique journey and helping them navigate their paths to success. Her focus is on empowering students by striving to understand their backgrounds, strengths, and challenges, and ensuring they feel supported and valued in their career development.

Mentorship holds a special place in her heart, and she has engaged in both formal and informal mentoring roles. Julie finds immense satisfaction in helping others realize their full potential and learning from their experiences. She is an advocate for lifelong learning and views challenges as valuable opportunities for growth.
