33.7-11 Ten Outside Camp

Quote: “thus the lord used to speak to Moses face to face, us to speak to friend. then he would return to the camp; but his young as-sistant, Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the tent”. (Exod.33.11)

what i think is God treated Moses as friend to him.

thispassege has no idea and no suggestion.

Exodus 31:18

Exodus 31:18

Where-Mt Sinai (Modern Day Arabia)

Who-God and Moses

Time-Around 1445 B.C.

“When God finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God”. (EX. 31:18)

We see God instructing Moses to write on two tablets what would end being the Law of the new Nation. These tablets most likely made of stone or marble which was abundant around Mt Sinai. The laws that were inscribed on the tablet are described as to be written by the finger of God. Tablets of the covenant refers to the promise that God made to his people that all that follow his laws will be a great nation and have God’s favor.

Exodus 33:12-23 Moses’ Intercession

-Moses, the Lord

-Moses asked the Lord that in order for Moses and his people, the Israelites, to follow the Lord, the Lord would have to tell or show the people in person.  Moses seemed unhappy that the Lord never showed face in person to anyone, and that in order for the people to follow, he would have to do that.  The Lord explained that no one could see him in person, because the Lord told Moses that whoever sees his face would die.

-In turn, the Lord let only Moses  see his glory, but again, not his face.

Exodus 31: 12-17

God said to keep the Sabbath day because it is holy and anyone who works on the Sabbath day should be put to death. Work should only be done for six days since He only created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. God says the Sabbath is a sign between the Lord and His children.

M: Exodus 34.1-9

Facts

People: Moses, God

Place: Mount Sinai

When: After Moses breaks the tablets, during the day

What: God is telling Moses to make new tablets

Ideas

“The Lord passed before him, and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation’ “.

Author: Wanted to show God’s mercy? Show how God is a God of love? Make an attempt to paint a picture of God?

Ideas: God knows what it is to feel as a human does. God feels love and anger and forgiveness.

Wording: “Steadfast Love” appears a few times, maybe it was meant to show God’s patience and determination? The word “abounding” gives an image of exploding with love.  The use of steadfast and abounding seems to create a kind of dichotomy between themselves.

Symbols: Tablets, like a solidified word of God, literally set in stone.

Monday’s Class (2-13-12)

Exodus Ch 33 :12-23

Quote: “For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight , except You go with us ? So we shall  be separate , Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth'”(Exd. 33.16).

Moses  intention here is to persuade God to come along with His people. Moses argues that if God does not go with them, how will the rest of the world know that they are His chosen people.

The word choice tells me that God and Moses seem to have  a close relationship for he refers to God as You and not God or Lord. He does not say in less the Lord goes with us but You. Which makes me think they do have that close , friend like, relationship.

12/13/12 G: 33.15-24 Moses’ Intercession

Who- Moses, God

Where- Mt.Sinai

When- After the Golden Calf is made

What- Moses is asking God to go with them when they leave Mt. Sinai and to be able to see God. God agrees but says Moses shall not see his face.

Quote:

“If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight. I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people from every people on the face of the earth”(Exod. 33.15-16).

-Moses seems to still be afraid and uncertain of his abilities to lead the Israelites.  He wants God there to continue protecting him.

-Shows how Moses is playing into God’s ego by saying they will only be special and above others if God goes with them.

– Seems to be saying that the Israelites are distinct and special because they worship God and are blessed by him.  Meanwhile, everyone else is ordinary and below them for not worshipping God.

2/13/12 M 33.12-23 Moses Makes New Tablets

Moses made new tablets identical to the ones he previously broke. He did this while on the mountain of Sinai. Moses asks for forgiveness from God for the Israelites who previously worshipped the Golden Calf as their God, which was created by his brother Aaron. Moses calls the Israelites “stiff necked people,” stubborn, and asked for their forgiveness.

Example of how to quote footnotes.

You need to cite the source the same way  you would any source.  In this case the author is the editor of the edition: William Attridge et al.

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut” (Attridge et al 256).

or

Attridge et al in the Harper Collins Study Bible, write: “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut” (256).

The bibliographic entry that would follow the above example would be as follows:

  • The Harper Collins Study Bible. Ed. William Attridge et al. New York: Harper Collins, 2006. Print.
