Nature, Askew

June 11 – July 5, 2015
Opening reception: Thursday, June 11, 5-7p.m.

Nature and culture are often seen as opposite ideas: what belongs to nature cannot be the result of human intervention and we perceive that cultural development is achieved against nature. However, there are many other ways of understanding the relationship between nature and culture. Studies suggest that culture is an important part of the ecological niche within which our species has thrived, rendering culture as pivotal in our biological development.

From: The Nature-Culture Divide, Andrea Borghini, about.com

Artists are sensitive to shifts in the culture and as makers, are constantly examining their relationship to nature. Unwittingly they are the proverbial canaries in the coalmine. The artists in the exhibit Nature, Askew imagine or depict the world unidealized, their vision thwarts our expectations in some way. Their works stand in contrast to the long held nineteenth century romanticized view of the world, which still holds sway today. They alert us to our own yearning and anxiety of the effects that culture exerts on nature in our post post-modern world.
