Materials Matter 1 – Lavaughan Jenkins

October 26 – November 27, 2018
Reception: Thursday, November 8, 5:30 -7:30 p.m.

This two-part exhibit Materials Matter 1, a solo show of the works of Lavaughan Jenkins, and Materials Matter 2, Lavaughan Jenkins and Friends – explores the physicality of paint as an imperative, a rationale for the process and its conclusion. The two exhibits notate the continual elasticity of painting as it has been evolving over centuries, and as an inverse mirror of the ever-accelerating changes in our culture in the Digital Age, and how that is changing the nature and perception of painting. It opens up the conversation among practitioners who are pushing the boundaries of the medium.

Lavaughan Jenkins’ paintings push these boundaries by using oil paint to make three dimensional work or “3D Paintings”.  The work alludes to the recent history of painting, reflecting artists for whom the material is essential, from Joan Mitchell to Wayne Tiebaud to Mark Bradford. The pieces are a hybrid, a way of experiencing the paint in space. They are an exuberant declaration of love for the material itself, of the idea that materials matter.

Lavaughan Jenkins was born in Florida, and lives and works in Boston. He has a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and has participated in the Yale University Norfolk Residency Program. He was the recipient of the Blanche E. Coleman Award in 2015, and the Rob Moore Grant in 2002. He has exhibited in galleries nationally and internationally, most recently at the Beaver Country Day School, MassArt Galleries, Judi Rotenberg Gallery, and 666 Artspace and Oasis Gallery both in Beijing, China. He is an upcoming ICA/Boston James and Audrey Foster Prize recipient.
