North Square Vision

In 2012 an idea I had for a vision of North Square began a series of spatial investigations that embarrassed the City of Boston into allocating 2.5 million dollars for the renewal of this space.

While our design proposal was considered, others were hired for the work.

The renovation is currently underway, and still contains furniture I designed, built and installed over the last 5 years.

Sicilian Fishermen’s Tribute for Long Wharf Boston

Crosstown has been engaged in environmentally and socially responsible
artistic and architectural investigations.

Our mission has evolved since our inception in 1999, from promoting the fine and applied arts via the Internet, to directing attention to small scale urban and natural habitats in need of responsible and accessible design.

a tribute to the Sicilian fishermen of days gone by revolved around a platform on which the annual ritual of the “blessing of the fleet” would be conducted, and the haptic experience of the netting with which the fishermen were constantly engaged.

p-195. Stair Volumes

Universalizing and generalization in the field of architecture is a convenient way of imparting skills to students without over-prescribing what is needed as a result.

In backwards design, we

  1. identify a desired result
  2. determine acceptable evidence
  3. plan learning experience and instruction

It is useful, for example, to consider the design of stairwell volume enclosures.

In Advanced IDC we are showing students how to define the stairwell volumes and use these as a proxy for the stairs themselves, solid geometry operations then subtract the volume from the roof geometry, as shown below.  It’s a way of thinking about the stair enclosure that I think critical.
