Blog 2. Fracking, its pros and cons, and its possible environmental impact.
According to BBC Hydraulic Fracturing or Fracking is a technique designed to recover gas and oil from shale rock. Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well.
Fracking allows drilling firms to access difficult to reach resources of oil and gas. In the US it has significantly boosted domestic oil production and driven down gas prices. There a few more pros to fracking as the Occupy Theory website descbries : improves air quality by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, decreases dependency on foreign oil which also leads to lower taxes,and increases return on investments. Although this system may be beneficial in some areas, it can also be harmful in other areas. Many believe fracking does not allow the discovery of new energy sources, water droughts is another reason fracking is bad for our environment because it requires huge amounts of water. In the areas where fracking is performed we have an increase in pollution. Water supplies in fracking zones have been known to show an increased presence of toxic chemicals. In addition, these toxins are also released into the air, which leads to an increase in air pollution. Residents of these areas are often disturbed by the noise the presence of the heavy vehicles on their daily lifes. To conclude fracking may be a great solution for our economy, however it is not for our environment. Fracking has caused a few earth tremors, and it continuously releases toxins in the air we breathe.
